Anthony Linden studied at the University of Melbourne,
Australia, obtaining his B.Sc. (Hons.) in 1979 and his Ph.D. in inorganic
chemistry in 1986. He then spent three years (1986-9) as a Postdoctoral
Fellow in the crystallography group of Profs. T.S. Cameron and O. Knop,
Department of Chemistry, Dalhousie University, Canada. He moved to
Switzerland in October 1989 and since then has been the Manager of the
X-ray Crystallography Facility in the Organic Chemistry Institute of the
University of Zürich. He is also currently a Co-editor of Section C
of Acta Crystallographica, a member of the Advisory Board of Helvetica
Chimica Acta, and a lecturer at the Swiss Technical University (ETH) Zürich.
His Ph.D. studies involved synthesising and determining the
structures of crystals of highly unstable transition metal fluorides. The
postdoctoral years focused on detailed
crystallographic studies of hydrogen bonding interactions (e.g. N-H...pi
interactions), conformational analyses and the structures of organometallic
compounds. As Manager of the X-ray Crystallography Facility he has accumulated
extensive crystallographic experience with a wide range of organic molecules,
inorganic materials and organometallic complexes.
Current responsibilities include overseeing all aspects of the operation,
maintenance and development of the X-ray Crystallography Facility, providing
a state of the art crystal structure determination service, and fostering collaborative links
with external industrial and academic clients. He is also responsible for
collaborating and advising on the publication of structural results, conducting and demonstrating
database searches, deposition of data in the crystallographic databases, and
maintaining and upgrading the crystallographic software. He leads a small team of two
and annually presents a one-semester hands-on
postgraduate course
on X-ray crystallography.
