Welcome to the mass spectrometry department of the OCI at the University of Zurich. Dr. Laurent Bigler, supported by Urs Stalder, and a teaching assistant, provide rapid and highly accurate measurements for routine analyses. We also support research projects, and offer contract analyses in various domains.
Most of the routine mass spectra are collected on four instruments, a Finnigan MAT95, a Finnigan TSQ700, and a Bruker EsquireLC, and a Bruker Autoflex using electron impact ionization (EI), chemical ionization (CI), electrospray ionization (ESI), and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI), and matrix assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI). The MAT95 is suitable for performing high-resolution experiments (HR-MS). The TSQ700 and EsquireLC are coupled to high performance liquid chromatographic systems allowing the measurement of HPLC-ESI/APCI-MS. These mass spectrometers provide not only the possibility to detect the signals from labile small or large (bio)-molecules applied in solutions but it also allows to obtain structural information from fragmentations by collision induced dissociation(MS/MS). Finally, the Autoflex MALDI-TOF is used for the analysis of mainly large and/or labile synthetic molecules and biopolymers.
If needed, GC-MS analyses can be run on a Thermo Finnigan DSQ instrument.
